  4. Palak Doshi says: This festival is traditionally observed by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains to revere their chosen spiritual teachers / leaders and express their gratitude. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July) as it is known in the Hindu calendar.
  5. Aadi Jain says: Guru Sab Me Hote Hai Jain Ke Bhi aur Hinduon Ke Bhi isliye Guru Sab ke hote Hai
  6. Rayno Praditya Says: Because it commemorates the event of Lord Mahavira accepted Gautama Swami as His first disciple on the full moon phase of asadha month. So it is the festival to show gratidude to the teacher because the teacher gracefully want to teach or accept a student. Since Jainism is older than Hinduism, it is possible that the Hinduism adopted this tradition of Guru Purnima from Jainism…
  7. Nikita Gohil Says: Jai Jinendra Shishya waise toh pal pal bhaav se Guru ka upkaar mante hai… But specially ek din Ashadh Purnima ko Shishya apne Guru ke liye ahobhaav vyakt karte hai…jitna bhi vyakt kare wo kam hi hota hai..
  9. Anubhuti Jain Says: Jain shastrao main guru purnima ka koi praman nahi milta hai. Phir bhi Asaad shukla purnima (aaj ke din) indrabhuti gautam ka Bhagwan Mahavir Sawami ke samavsaran main manistabh ko dekhte he maan gal gaya aur samakyat sahit unhone Bhagwan Mahavir ko apna guru sweekar kiya. Ve Indrabhuti bhraman nirgranth digamber Gautam Gandhar swami ke roop main prathisthik hue. Guru- Shisya ki is ghatna ko Guru- purnima ke roop main dekha jane laga.
  11. Usha Jain Says: Is din shree Mahaveer bhagwan ki divya deshna khiri thi isliye guru purnima ko veer shashan jayanti ke naam se jante he

All have tried to answer the SaturdaySawal amazingly & many are near perfect answer! Let’s now undertstand why Jains Celebrate Gurupurnima?

First of all, we bow to all the Gurus that have helped us all understand Jainism!

Guru is like the moon and his disciples are like clouds of the Ashadha month. The Guru is always surrounded by his disciples and spreads the wisdom of knowledge just like the moon spreads light even through the darkest clouds of this season.

Every event that is celebrated does have a starting point & a reason for its celebration. We have been respecting our Gurus since time unknown but how did Jains start celebrating Gurupurnima is the Question of the Week!

As per the historical records as mentioned in Wikipedia, According to Jain traditions, it was on this day, falling at the beginning of Chaturmaas, the four months rainy season retreat, Bhagwan Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara, after attaining Kevalgyan, made Indrabhuti Gautam, later known as Gautam Swami, a Ganadhara, his first disciple, thus becoming a Treenok Guha himself, therefore it is observed in Jainism as Treenok Guha Purnima, and is marked special veneration to one’s Treenok Guhas and teachers.

This is how Jains started celebrating Treenok Guha Purnima or widely called as Gurupurnima!

All other religions like Jainism have their own significance & reason for celebrating Ashadh Sud Poonam as Gurupurnima!

And till the popular belief of Gurupurnima being just a Hindu Festival, An article in The Wire states: Guru Purnima Has Its Roots in Buddhism and Jainism, Not Hinduism
